The two job generation

We know a lot of you think your rent is unaffordable - 61% of you to be precise. That's what you told us when we asked recently. What's more, 41% of you told us you spend over half your take home pay on rent.

So we couldn't help but wonder...are some of you having to work more than one job to cover the rent?

The simple answer to that is yes, you are. Over 2,500 of you took our survey and a huge 41% said you have a second job. Not only that, 62% of those who do said you couldn't afford your rent without it.

But it doesn't stop there. If you're under 30, you're more likely to have a second job. That's also true if you're female - 45% of women have second jobs, compared to 36% of men.

So, it only follows that women under 30 are the most likely to have more than one job, and the least likely to be able to afford their rent without it.

Here are the results:

When it came to the types of second job people had we saw a huge variety, from bar tending and pet sitting, through to stand up comedy or starting a business. But the one thing that stood out above all else was delivery jobs in the gig economy.

However you pay your rent, don't forget to enter SpareRoom's Live Rent Free competition. We pay someone's rent for a month, every month, and we also match every prize and donate the same amount to Breaking Ground, to help them combat homelessness and give real, practical help to those who need it most.
